Top 5 BEST Hammer Drill – Impact Driver Combo Kits for Beginners

Hello everyone, with the recent post I made regarding top power tools I would like to take some time and go through these more in depth, give some clarification outside of the broad sense. Note I do recommend starting with an 18-20v lineup so I am I will only be mentioning those types of battery lines. 12V products are very good as well but more on the niche side, I have a 12v Milwaukee drill set I absolutely love using for home DIY like electrical! Here however we are sticking to woodworking

I will preface this by saying this is a fairly inexpensive set, I have personally used these for over 5 years now and they have not let me down. In hindsight however I do believe there are better options out there for the price. Regardless this is a brushed set of power tools, inexpensive that I would use as a stepping stone product. Nothing wrong with these at all, this kit in particular comes with two batteries, the drill and driver. They are lacking the power of brushless tools but for starting out these are perfect for 100 dollars at time of sales. I will put the Amazon link below the photo.

#4 Ryobi One+ Set “Brushed”

While this product is in the same line as the Craftsman set of brushed drills. I do believe the Ryobi set at this price point is excellent for an entry level battery platform, the drills themselves are very nice BUT the battery platform reaches far greater than Craftsman. They have so many products in their product line that the sky is the limit in terms of expansion. Overall from a spec standpoint very nice, entry level for sure but a great product none the less. Now for some Pros and Cons –

  • PROS
  1. Affordability:
    • Cost-Effective: Significantly more affordable than brushless models, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious users.
  2. Battery System:
    • 18V One+ Lithium-Ion Batteries: Compatible with over 175 Ryobi tools, offering excellent versatility and convenience for users with other Ryobi tools.
    • Reasonable Battery Life: Provides sufficient runtime for many DIY projects and light-duty tasks.

  4. User-Friendly Design:
    • Ergonomic Design: Comfortable grips and well-balanced tools make them easy to handle.
    • LED Work Lights: Built-in lights on some tools improve visibility in dimly lit areas.
  5. Ease of Use:
    • Simple Controls: Easy-to-use features and controls make it suitable for beginners and casual users.

Cons

  1. Performance:
    • Less Efficient: Brushed motors are less efficient compared to brushless motors, resulting in shorter runtime and slightly lower power output.
    • Higher Maintenance: Brushed motors require more maintenance over time due to the wear and tear on brushes.
  2. Battery Life Under Heavy Use:
    • Moderate Drainage: Batteries can drain relatively quickly under continuous heavy use, necessitating frequent recharging or additional batteries.
  3. Durability:
    • Build Quality: While adequate for light-duty tasks, the tools may not withstand heavy-duty or professional use as well as more premium brands.
  4. Weight and Size:
    • Heavier and Bulkier: Brushed tools are often heavier and bulkier compared to their brushless counterparts, potentially leading to quicker user fatigue.

The Ryobi One+ Brushed Set offers excellent value for those looking to build a versatile toolkit without breaking the bank. It is well-suited for DIY enthusiasts, homeowners, and light-duty users who need a reliable set of tools for occasional use. However, it may fall short in terms of efficiency, power, and durability compared to brushless models and higher-end brands. Overall, it provides a good balance of performance, affordability, and versatility for non-professional users.

#3 Ryobi One+ HP Brushless Set

Okay, I know my last rank was a Ryobi Brushed set BUT we are in the top 3 so I am basing these decisions outside of just the drills, the brushless set is going to be all you will ever need for the work we are doing. The brushless motors will last longer and be more powerful than the brushed set, while they are yes more expensive you are getting MUCH more product. For some Pros and Cons

Pros

  1. Brushless Motor Technology:
  2. Power and Performance:
  3. Battery System: Huge Battery Platform
  4. Affordability:

Cons

  1. Durability:
    • Build Quality: While robust, it may not be as durable as some higher-end brands when used in very demanding conditions over long periods.
  2. Power Limitations:
    • Not as Powerful as Premium Brands: Although powerful, it may not match the high torque and speed of more expensive, professional-grade models like DeWalt or Milwaukee.
  3. Additional Features:
    • Fewer Advanced Features: May lack some of the advanced features and settings found in more premium tool sets.

Again with this being brushless it is near perfect but what makes me place this at number 3 is their battery platform, their battery platform is huge. There are so many other tools that you can use this platform with, I almost personally switched to Ryobi just due to how many other products they offer under that battery line. You can get outdoor tools, indoor DIY tools. They are truly a brand that as an entry level DIYer you can stick with them indefinitely. You can also pick these up relatively cheap at the big orange store for a decent price with batteries.

#2 DeWalt 20V Max Brushless Set

We are getting to the obvious top 2 suggestions here. Dewalt has a great platform for carpenters, their products are strong and last. As a fellow Craftsman guy I tend to respect DeWalt. For some Pros and Cons –

  3. Battery Life Under Heavy Use:

The DeWalt 20V Max Brushless Set is highly regarded for its power, efficiency, and durability, making it an excellent choice for professionals and serious DIYers. However, its higher price and weight might be considerations for some users. Overall, it offers robust performance and a range of features that make it a valuable addition to any tool collection.

#1 Milwaukee M18 Brushless Drill Driver set

Some people might think this is controversial, I am unfortunately team red BUT there are technically one more tier up on both #1 and #2 products. The XR line for Dewalt and the Fuel line for Milwaukee. My reasoning behind this is we aren’t contractors, truthfully we do not NEED the additional power that comes with those lines for an extra 100 bucks. The M18 line is just as good as Ryobi’s their tools are exceptional and realistically that is why I went down the road of Milwaukee from Craftsman. Now for some Pros and Cons.

Pros

  1. Brushless Motor Technology:
    • Increased Efficiency: Brushless motors provide more power and longer runtime compared to brushed motors.
    • Longer Tool Life: Less wear and tear on the motor extends the lifespan of the tools.
  2. Power and Performance:
    • High Torque and Speed: Capable of handling a wide range of heavy-duty tasks with ease.
    • Variable Speed Control: Offers precision and control for different applications.

  4. Durability:
    • Sturdy Build Quality: Designed to withstand tough job site conditions.
    • All-Metal Gear Housing: Enhances the durability and longevity of the tools.
  5. User-Friendly Features:
    • LED Work Lights: Built-in lights illuminate the work area, improving visibility.
    • Compact and Lightweight: Easy to handle and ideal for use in tight spaces.
    • Ergonomic Design: Comfortable grip reduces user fatigue during extended use.
  6. Included Components:
    • Typically includes a drill/driver and an impact driver, along with batteries, a charger, and a carrying case, providing a comprehensive set for various tasks.

Cons

  1. Cost:
    • Higher Price Point: More expensive than many other brands and models, which might be a concern for budget-conscious buyers.
  2. Weight:
    • Heavier Than Some Models: Though compact, the tools can still be somewhat heavy compared to some other brands, which might lead to quicker user fatigue during prolonged use.
